April 29, 2004 The staff and students of Lynnhaven Middle School are ecstatic over the announcement of Lynnhaven Middle School's selection as a Virginia School to Watch. Earlier this year, LMS underwent a rigorous evaluation performed by a team of experienced educational professionals from across the state. This group was comprised of school superintendents, principals and teachers and visited LMS with
the mission to evaluate all facets of the educational experience at LMS. The team was highly complimentary of many areas of criteria including the strength of our teachers and administrators, the positive comments of our students, the depth of our curriculum and the efficient manner in which our school operates. We are very proud of this distinction as being but one of the three schools selected in the state of Virginia for this honor. Way to go everyone!!! Read about the Schools to Watch.

Lynnhaven
Middle School Plan for Continuous Improvement

For over a quarter century, since its opening in 1974, Lynnhaven Middle
School has served its community with great distinction for both academic and extracurricular success. Lynnhaven currently serves some 1,200 students in grades six through eight. It employs a school-within-a-school concept, interdisciplinary teaming, and an extensive range of exploratory courses to compliment core area instruction in English, math, science and social studies. Programs focusing on eighth grade block scheduling and emotional intelligence were also implemented in 1999, while our intervention reading program continues. L.M.S. receives students from several feeder elementary schools, including Alanton, Birdneck, King's Grant, Linkhorn Park, Seatack, and Trantwood. Upon completion of their studies here in grade eight, our students go onto Cox and First Colonial High Schools or to one of the magnet programs at Landstown, Ocean Lakes or Princess Anne High Schools. Our 140,000 square foot physical plant sits on a twenty-five acre site just off Old Donation Parkway in close proximity to Virginia Beach General Hospital.
Our mission statement, as set forth in our strategic plan, is simply put: "Student Success."

Lynnhaven Middle School
Certified as Parent Involvement School of Excellence
April 30, 2003 More than 1200 students at Lynnhaven Middle School in Virg
inia Beach have one more reason to take pride in their school. National PTA has certified Lynnhaven as a Parent Involvement School of Excellence. National PTA’s Parent Involvement Schools of Excellence certification program recognizes schools that uphold the highest standards in parent involvement and that help meet parent involvement provisions in the 2001 Elementary and Secondary Education Act, reauthorized as the No Child Left Behind Act. All schools in the nation are encouraged to submit an application to National PTA.
As part of the certification process, Lynnhaven formed a team consisting of the principal, teachers, parents, students, and representatives from the community; completed a self-assessment; and applied for one of two distinctions—Certification of Excellence or Recognition of Commitment—based on the results of their self-assessment. According to team members, the certification is a symbol of parents, staff, and community members working together for the common goal of helping children succeed.
The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, National Association of Elementary School Principals, National Association of Secondary School Principals, National Education Association, and National School Public Relations Association joined National PTA in the development and implementation of the certification program.
